For my sanity

May 19, 2009

I haven’t blogged in awhile, mostly because no one cares about reading them and I feel like blogs tend to be a bit on the braggy side.  I suppose that’s what this is about, but in my mind I’m doing it to list off the projects and goals that I’ve set and completed.

Since derby has taken up a good chunk of my time, I haven’t had much time to devote to photography.  There’s also another reason why but I don’t feel like talking about it right now since I’m still pretty hurt about that.  Anyway I’ve had a few jobs here and there but I’ve not really talked about them.  I’ve got a few scheduled for the spring and summer, and if I can get time to redo my website to something flashier (I despise Flash websites but apparently it looks more “professional”) I’ll probably try to do that.

Roller derby is kind of my new thing right now.  It’s a lot of fun, the girls are wonderful.  I like that I can have conversation with women and it not be about kids all the time.  I kind of fear women these days because everyone I know that has kids wants to just blah blah blah about them and since I don’t have them, I’d really rather talk about something else.  A lot of the derby girls are mothers, with full time jobs, and they still manage to kick ass on the track every week several times a day.  They’re great role models and they’re very down to earth – my kind of people.

Now on to the things that have been occupying my non-derby time.  Since I’ve got knee troubles, I’ve been trying to use my craftiness more instead of going bike riding and such.  I’ve been doing little projects so far just to build up my confidence.  It’s possible that if I can get the effort going and the time that I might set up an Etsy shop and sell some things through LaBellaFlor.com, but that’ll be a little down the road I think.  I’ve got a few friends right now that are pregnant and I am going to make little baby trinkets for them.

Here’s what I’ve completed:

The first thing that I’ve done in this flurry of creation is an Infinity Dress.  It’s basically a circle skirt with two long and wide strips of fabric that is sewn onto the front of the skirt and then tied in any fashion that you choose.  There are millions of ways to tie this thing, but without a guide I have no clue.  I have a second idea for this and it’s a bit closer to the version that American Apparel sells.  On that version there is a bodice sewn on the skirt and the long strips are then connected to that.  It makes hiding skin on the torso a bit easier and you can use it as a dress, skirt or shirt much easier than the original Infinity.

Second thing on the list is the beginning of the master bathroom remodel.  When we bought our house, it was severely under market value.  In addition, we were successfully able to talk them down another $10,000.  Now with a house that low in price, it’s expected that there would be a little damage to some things or other things not right or just ugly.  Luckily there weren’t too many things wrong with ours, the exception being permanent discoloration of the vinyl flooring in several rooms due to rugs.  The master bathroom has this issue, but also has no color on the walls and a plain-jane oak-laminate vanity.  Menards was having a sale on vanities and tops, so a few months ago we purchased an unfinished oak vanity and a granite/silkstone sink top.  I spent a couple of days staining the vanity with a mahogany color that is both romantic and warm.  The new vanity has pull out drawers now so that I might be able to remove the little one I have in there for makeup and other essentials.  Next is ceramic tile and a new coat of paint.

The third thing that I’ve completed is another circle skirt for roller derby.  I really only have one skirt that I use and it’s from when I was in high school.  It’s a bit long and I don’t really want to hem it shorter, so I just made a different one from some corduroy material I had sitting around.  It looks alright with my referee shirt, but I was playing around with it and it looks pretty neat with some other clothes I have.  Dual duty!

Finally the last thing I’ve completed is the standard window curtain.  Andy and I went to Ikea not too long ago and I saw this wonderful fabric there and had to buy it.  I would like to make a business card holder and maybe a tote bag out of the remnants, but for now I’ve made a curtain for our kitchen window.  Before it was a horrible plain brown curtain from Walmart (I had to get something different from the stupid plaid one before in a hurry!)

and now it’s a fun gunmetal grey pattern.  This will look sweet when we paint the kitchen olive and put tiles as a back splash above the cabinets.

Speaking of kitchen, another project I’d love to try is painting the counter tops.  This *sounds* like a horrible idea, but I’ve found a tutorial that makes it look exactly like marble for about an 1/8th of the cost.

So now on my plate are more clothes (I’ve got a few dresses in the works), messenger bags, a few more totes/purses and the aforementioned baby stuff.  House improvements, planting trees, making more coasters, reupholstering the chaise lounge I bought from CraigsList and I hope to finish my new skate bag before try-outs in the summer.

August 6, 2008

I know I’ve been really bad about not posting anything lately, especially my wedding pictures.  Those will come as soon as I have them, and I don’t have them yet.  Rest assured that when I have them I will post them.

On to other things, I had a few photo sessions this summer so far, and the latest was Carmen and Dave.  Andy and I went up to Fort Wayne for the ceremony.  It was a ton of fun.  Check out my site at La Bella Flor to see more.

Today was not a very good day.  Along with my house purchasing ordeal and my mom’s hospital planning for Friday, I was alerted to one of my photographs that I took being displayed on the godawful site icanhascheezburger.com.  The picture is on the main site, but for purposes of this writing, please do not give this site any more traffic just to see what I’m talking about.

The picture is one that I took of my cats, Aeris and Cloud.  The picture is of them sticking their tongues out at the camera.  Apparently at some point, someone stole this image off my ohheather.com website, uploaded it to this website, put some unfunny and horribly written English on the photo and it is now displayed on their page.

A couple of things.  I watermark all of my images that I intend to display for just such an occurance.  I didn’t watermark this because it’s a picture of my cats.  Now as I understand it, just because it’s not watermarked doesn’t mean I do not own the copyright.  I actually display a copyright notice at the bottom of my page just in case someone doesn’t get it.

I sent them a notice that this picture was not uploaded by me, nor did I give authorization for anyone to use this picture without my consent.  They wrote me back via email saying they would gladly give me credit and a link back to my site, but offered to remove the image upon further request for removal.  I replied back that I indeed want removal.  Their response was that I needed to send them a letter via mail to their address in Seattle stating how I own the picture and where the image is located, at that point they would remove the image.

So as you can guess, I got angrier at their reply.  Of course no one needs to certify via mail that the image they are uploading belongs to them, but in order for this company to remove it, they must receive a letter via mail.  I decided to play their game.  I wrote a document stating that I owned it, didn’t authorize it, where the original is located and they must remove it, via Certified Mail.

This whole thing is very stupid.  They are basically making ad revenue off of a picture that was illegally obtained/claimed ownership by someone else, passed along as someone else’s work and now refuse to remove the image (thus far).

Please don’t visit this website, and the lesson is learned.  If you’re going to upload something, make sure it has a copyright notice or make it unusable by someone else.  I don’t care about the money aspect as much, but someone that is not me should not take my stuff and pass it along as belonging to someone else.

Random goings on

December 12, 2007

I haven’t blogged in awhile, but mostly that’s because I’m crushingly busy.

Photography
I’m pretty sure I didn’t post any pictures of the wedding I flew out to California for.  I had lots of fun out there with Teresa and Jase (and extraneously Jenny and Steve) and it was good for me to photograph the days up to and after the ceremony/party.  We even got to do a Trash The Dress on the coast which was really good practice and a ton of fun.

I think weddings will always be a learning experience for me because there are so many different ways that things can play out and how people act that it’s almost impossible to plan for the same type of picture for everyone.  You can always try, but sometimes those differences make a better picture.

I tried a new model in Mirinda in October.  We learned that a bright sunset does not go well with shadows and sun in the eyes, but the sky color is killer with the polarizer in the right place.  We also tried some tricks with the studio, and I’ve gotten a different experience with Photoshop editing with those shots.

I spent nearly 24 hours photographing the birth of my first cousin once removed in November.  I had not yet experienced a live birth so it was both a great experience as a photographer and again as a cousin, friend and future potential mommy-ness (!!).  Soon I’ll get to take photos of the new baby at home settled in.

Last weekend (December 8th) I had a photo session with Leslie.  We did her maternity photos.  I can’t stress enough how much I love working with this girl, and not just because I’m trying to be nice.  She is so fun and even though she “works it” for the camera, she has a great imagination and an artist’s eye.  I think part of it is that she knows what looks good, but then playfully tries new poses to mix it up.  I rarely ever have to point out poses for her or to have her repeat a pose for long.  We had some excellent shots and I’m really excited to edit them.  With her permission I will repost the ones she OKs.

Work
Same crap I will always talk about.  Blackboard is always acting like a big baby and although I’ve been the admin for 2 years on it, sometimes it just doesn’t make any sense to me.  It feels like I’m lost and the fact that it is constantly going down or screwing up and on top of that support is close to nil, it makes me just want to scratch my eyes out.  One day everything will be perfect but I’m not going to hold my breath for that day.  Also, NOT HAPPY I have to work over the entire holiday break.  Please please can I get out of it?  :(

Life
I have been putting my Palm to good use and put a calorie tracker on it.  I have to either save the packaging for everything I eat or find it online to put in all the nutrients.  It’s helpful that it also tracks my workouts and mood so that I can get a good overall picture of my weight loss goals.  Which brings me to the last topic of

Wedding Planning
I finally bought the dress.  I really didn’t want to buy it from Posie Patch which I have outlined previously, but I had no choice.  I did give other bridal shops a chance but either nothing had everything I wanted, it just wasn’t my style or it was way out of my price range.  I don’t think I’ll ever have a dress that is 100% perfect and I can find a few faults with this one, but overall it has everything I asked for (p.s. *this* girl isn’t having a white wedding).

I agonized over getting the dress size I can wear right now, or getting the smaller size in anticipation of my weight loss.  After what felt like 15 minutes I finally let Mirinda talk me into the smaller one.  I feel like if I keep up with my calorie counter and going to the gym 4 times a week like I have been, I should be down to my high school weight by February.

Within the last month we’ve narrowed our guest list, finalized the invitations we wanted, bought the dress, planned and bought our honeymoon and smaller things on our to-do list.  Well, whether Andy admits it or not, I pretty much do all the planning and then ask for his opinion.  Our opinions are pretty much the same so it’s usually ok, but really…  Sometimes I feel like I just want to have the parents, brothers, sisters, Chata and Andy be the only ones with all the stress over money and crap that goes on (no offense to any friends not mentioned).  But then I think about how friends and family really shape who you are as a person, and I would love to have them all around us having a good time.

It seems like we’re having a much bigger wedding than we intially wanted, so we may or may not pare down the wedding party and total guests invited.  I guess it just depends on how we feel in the next month or two.  Honestly if we do, it’s not a slight on anyone, it’s just that we are well aware on how much a wedding costs and to put the burden of gifts,  bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen tuxes on people sometimes seems a little unfair.  Mirinda tries to convince me that it is MY wedding and I can do what I want, but you all know me, I aim to please.  :)

Well I guess that’s all.  Look for a Year in Pictures whenever I can get another chance to settle down for a blog again.  Happy holidays everyone.

OhHeather.com back up plus one

September 30, 2007

OhHeather.com is currently back up and running.  Thanks to all those that let me know it was down.  I was aware of it, but the constant reminder was good to kick my butt and get new hosting.  There are a few more things I need to update but the blog content is now current.

Along with the new hosting I got a photography front.  The site is called LaBellaFlor.com (The Beautiful Flower).  It’s just a basic web presence right now, but once I get Mirinda and Teresa and Jase’s wedding pictures all edited then I’ll have more time to really work on it.  I’ll probably take turns going between Oh Heather, La Bella Flor and the portraits, just to keep my mind fresh.

I put a link for LBF under blogroll/links on OhHeather.com on the left side bar, easy to switch to it from the “main” site.

Care of a bee butt.

Here’s what I pulled out of stupid-head’s inner lip:

Asia likes to bite the bugs that tend to congregate near her butt in the summertime, and we think this happened today while we were in the garage moving stuff around.  I happened to come out to see my dog with cheeks that looked like this:

The other side wasn’t as swollen so we moved it up and there we saw the stinger.  I pulled it out, and thanks to reaffirmation with the PI chat and SolanaSkyes and the emergency vet, we decided to go get some Benedryl.  Unfortunately she started puking and had some trouble breathing, so we started to pack her up in the car.  Before we took off though, her eyes started swelling up.  Here it is at the vet’s office:

None of the local animal “hospitals” were open, so we had to go to Indy to get it taken care of.  They were pretty nice and accomodating.  I’ve never used a VCA but was pretty happy with the service and the price ($148 total visit and shot fees).

Asia meets her vet tech and tries to give kisses, but can only manage the tip of her tongue on the tech’s chin:

So she was taken to the back and given injections of basically Benedryl and steroids, which she didn’t take too kindly/quietly.  It sounded like someone had just chopped off her tail and she wanted to let everyone know about it.  Here she is after the shots.  Not looking too happy.

The swelling is starting to go down, and we bought a box of Benedryl to keep in the house the next time it happens, because Asia-dog is pretty adamant about keeping her butt free of bugs.

I’m going to tell you a story.

In pictures.

If I need to add something, it’ll be directly above the picture.

No paparrazi please.

The girl does NOT like pink.  Or clown suits.  Or being anything but naked.
