It’s a lean Christmas

December 23, 2009

It is a well known fact that the economy is in the dumps right now.  Gas prices hit record since-the-80′s highs, real estate sales and prices are down, commodity prices are creeping up and we have been no exception for experiencing it.  Since my mother and father divorced, I’ve always had an enjoyable time (read: not) of shuffling back and forth for the holidays, trying to fit in my schedule with everyone else’s: step parents and their kids, extended families, boyfriend/husband’s family… it’s not something I ever look forward to because someone’s feelings are going to be hurt and I just can’t please everyone.  In the past couple of years I’ve just let everyone tell me what they want me to do and I’d find a way to work around it.  The older I get and the less flexible my life has become, the less I can make my obligations and everyone else satisfied.

Continuing, traveling to all of these places requires the purchase of gifts.  Now, while shuttling back and forth between the places and the resultant drama that preceeds and follows are not things I enjoy in the least, I do love giving presents.  The anticipation when the gifts are piled under the tree, excitement when they’re passed around, the studying of the wrapping and finally the smile on people’s faces when they have seen what was given.  The only problem is the economy.  My mother and father have both remarried, and with the new step mother or father comes their kids.  Now while the opportunity to give more presents isn’t daunting, the cost of such things are.  In the past, I’ve just charged whatever I was going to give and pay it off throughout the next half of the following year, but this year I’ve lived a bit leaner than others.  I’ve paid off a good deal of revolving credit accounts and racked up a bit of savings in the meantime.  The thought of charging stuff after all that hard work didn’t sound great to me, so this year I decided to only get what I could afford, or afford to make.  This year is the year of the Industrious, Creative, Crafty Heather that comes out in a pinch.  Here are some things that I’ve made for gifts:

The bag on the left was for my stepmom Carol.  The one on the right was for her son’s wife, Amy.  They’re floppy reversible totes that are ideal for small grocery shopping trips, gym bags or whatever else might be handy for having a shoulder strap bag.  There is a pocket on the inside that is big enough for a phone, keys or anything that might need to be separated from the main contents.

Soap making is a new thing I am trying, and so far it’s fun but very messy.  Above is a new concoction that I created for my stepmother’s daughter and her wife.  These soaps are made of animal free glycerin and human grade food ingredients.  I call them “Chocolate Pomegranate Cinnamon Tart Soaps.”  I haven’t actually used them in the shower like they are intended, but they were ok when I used them to wash my hands.  Hopefully Debbie and Betsy will be able to get good use out of them and give me decent feedback on what I need to improve them.

This is for my grandmother from Mexico.  The last time she came to visit, she came to my house for a taco dinner and kept telling my mom that she liked my paintings.  I figured I could make one up pretty quickly for her to take back to Mexico.  It’s not finished yet as of this post – I need to refine the hands a bit with the shadowing and length, but as I probably won’t repost a finished image, here it is unfinished.  Perhaps in the next post I will, as I need to finish up some other homemade gifts for people that will receive them for Christmas.

I’m hoping that over Christmas break I’ll have more time to work on some crafts that I’ve had piling up – reconning some clothes, making new clothes, a laptop sleeve I’ve needed recently and some Nintendo coasters for a friend out in California.  I just have to remember to wake up before 11:00am.

telanovelas are strange

November 6, 2007

I’m staying the night with chata in the hospital tonght. her little brother was here earlier and I found myself in the precarious position of having to entertain a 6 year old child that I could not understand. somehow I mangled enough spanish to keep him quiet and busy. I took my palm and took pictures of him and let him draw on himself and showed him fotos de mis gatos y perra. my cousin is watching some spanish sitcom on univision right now and I’m pretty much lost. they have a monitor on her baby so I can hear really loud heartbeats until she moves away. maia sometimes flops around so fast that you can hear a whooshing sound like someone blowing on a microphone really loudly.I think I’m going to try to get some sleep while her other show is on. it looks weird. updates on babies periodically as permitted.

Quick blog check

September 24, 2007

I’m watching Teresa and Jase open wedding presents right now, but probably soon I’m going to post some pics from the trash the dress session we took on the coast.  It was really silly – I’d take a picture and then jump around like an idiot.  Also, west coast norcal water is seriously colder than ice water.  It doesn’t help when you’re sitting on the beach and you don’t notice the shore roaring at you.  My panties got wet.

Steve is a snorer, just so you know.

I’m going to tell you a story.

In pictures.

If I need to add something, it’ll be directly above the picture.

No paparrazi please.

The girl does NOT like pink.  Or clown suits.  Or being anything but naked.

Juliet’s status

July 14, 2007

Going to see Juliet tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll have some pics.  Frank tells me she’s been great the last 4 days after having a big down turn the last few weeks.  She’s up to 18 whole ounces now!

To be continued tomorrow maybe with photographic proof.  Also I am distressed because Oracle won’t install grumble grumble.  Eff you, Enterprise Manager.

No pictures today, but I just got back from seeing Juliet Madeline (wrong spelling last time, sorry guys). She’s tiny, but not as small as I had imagined. It was still a little surprising to actually see her, since most exposure to babies is the usual crying mess. Juliet is in the NICU in an incubator, with tubes and crazy machines all hooked up to her. All stretched out she’s about as long as 3/4 of my forearm (which is smaller than my shoe size of 10). From what I’ve been told she’s doing “better,” or rather she’s mostly stable for the time being. It’s still very undetermined about her, but she definitely seems like she wants to stick around.

I brought my nice camera with me to take pictures but dumbass me left the card at work. Why I left it at work, no idea. I’ll be back at the hospital later this week to try again. Juliet needs to make her grand hello to the internet.

The good and the bad

June 4, 2007

The good:  Joe moved back to Westfield yesterday.  Yay.

The bad:  My stepbrother’s wife’s water broke on Sunday evening.  She’s only 26 weeks along. We haven’t heard anything since she was supposed to be transferred to the IU Med Center, so if anyone’s interested I can update accordingly.

My parents have decided to sell me their house they’re currently living in. This will be my home. It’s a huge house – enough to start my own family, and one I plan on living in for a long time. It has 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, about 2000 sq ft, good sized yard in a great school district. I get to live where I want in a house I’m familiar with that has plenty of room to grow.

Thanks mom and Frank!

Also, today was beautiful. We took the dog out on the Monon, went to look at summer bulbs in the garden shops and fencing material. It’s nice when Andy has Saturdays off.

Our wedding date is set for June 07, 2008.  Get it?  06/07/08.  Hurf durf.

I decided on that date because I wanted to get married in the springtime with lots of flowers and green.  June is late enough in spring that it won’t be raining all the time and I can have my outdoor wedding.  6-7-8 falls on a Saturday which is probably the most convenient time for everyone and let’s face it, it’s pretty damn easy to remember.

The bridal party right now is Jennifer, Melissa, Trish and Chata.  I say right now because you know things happen and all that and someone may have an emergency.  I don’t plan on kicking anyone out if that’s what you’re inferring.

I think I’ve picked out a dress, but I’m keeping my eyes open for something else.  I do have quite a bit more time and I’m looking at dresses up to 2007.  I have the 2008 dresses to look forward to as well.  The sticking point right now is bridesmaids dresses.  I want something fun, light and flirty for spring.  My mom and one of my bridesmaids want something elegant.  They get all angry eyebrows when I ask them to try on something that isn’t flowing and crap.  The main problem is I have two relatively short girls and two tall girls in my party.  Two of the girls aren’t going to look right in the dress depending on the length, so the search goes on.

I think I’m going to use a lavender purple for the main color.  I love purple roses.  This could change but that’s what is the front runner right now.

No clue on the ring bearer or flower girl.  I don’t really know any kids and the kids in my family I’d pick are in California or who knows what.  Officiant?  Right.  I’m going to let Andy pick that one out because I don’t belong to a church and I’m not letting my mom pick one out so she can have the guy make me say I’m God’s faithful follower and I will do whatever it wants.

I haven’t picked a location yet.  GOD everything is so expensive.  I can see a couple thou on rental of the facility, but everyone wants minimum of $5000+ on catering.  The Indianapolis Museum of Art wants a minimum of $8000 on catering with one of their locations.  What the fuck.  I’m not some rich princess here and come on, what kind of rich princess that has daddy pay for her wedding even knows where the MOA is?

I’m doing a photo shoot right now and I have some pictures done but I’m not sure I want to post them yet.  I have some I want to shoot again with different models, but I like where they’re going so far.

That’s it for now.
